Chilly Camp - December 2009

The 6th Brighton Scouts had planned for a nice chill out camp over the weekend of 18th -20th December, giving the Scout parents a children free weekend just before Christmas. Instead we ended up with a spectacular weekend in the snow at Parkwood. It was a challenge to even get the camp off the ground on the friday, with three leaders out in the snowy sticks of Woodingdean, a test run to Parkwood was carried out, once we knew that we could get out to site, camp was on and the message soon spread to our scouts and the parents managed to get them all out to Parkwood, despite the condition of some of the roads in Brighton. Jack took charge of the kitchen with 4 budding chefs to undertake their chef;s badge and the rest of us took the oppertunity to chill out and enjoy ourselves. Saturday morning was beautiful, gloriously sunny but cold. I had my camera and warm ski wear to hand and made my way out early into the quiet crisp woods. What a brilliant sight, its the first time in many years that I have been at Parkwood in the snow, it was great, seeing the animal tracks and lovely clean crisp snow, before the scouts decended on it after Pancakes for a snowman and snowball fight. We were joined by a plucky & cheeky Robin while we wandered through the woods. Snow Angels were created on the main and top field, it looked great. Saturday was finished off with a lovely christmas roast dinner prepared by our Scouts, a lovely occasion and a great way to spend the weekend before christmas. I have tons of photo's of Parkwood in the snow, a great treasure.

Dave Jackson R.I.P.

Sadly Dave Jackson, previous District Commissioner, passed away this morning. Many of you will know of Dave's three and a half year battle with cancer, although perhaps only more recently since he lost the use of his legs as the cancer spread to his spine. The end was mercifully short and Dave died at home with his family.

I have no doubt that without his positive attitude Dave would not have lasted anywhere near so long, and I shall always remember this of him.

District Cub Quiz

On Saturday 28^th November eight teams of four Cubs, from seven Packs, entered the annual quiz. This year the quiz was based on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, allowing the whole event to take place on one evening. There were four rounds, with each team member playing one round, until they got an answer wrong!

To explain the play there was a demonstration round with the leaders competing. This allowed the Cubs to see the different lifelines - 50:50, a reduction of possible answers, Phone a Friend, help from one of their team members and Ask the Audience, collaboration with the rest of their team and a leader.

The first game played out very well, with one Cub from 30^th Eagles getting to the £1000,000! This set them up well for the following rounds. Over the next three rounds no other Cubs reached the fifteenth question, but a few managed to gain £32,000. This led to the following final scores:

So 30^th Brighton Eagles won the team trophy, with Benjamin Cook taking home the Bright Spark trophy for the best score for his £1000,000 round.

Well done to all the Cubs (and Leaders) who took part. We're sorting out a date for next year and hope that more Packs will enter.

Clever Clogs Quiz

Fellowship members and friends made up 5 teams for this year's clever clogs quiz, which was held at the Mile Oak Pub. The questions ranged from general knowledge to history and many more.

Each team had a joker that they could play in whatever round that they liked, which would double the points. At the end of evening the winners, for the second year running, were Dave, Grant and Mike.

Well done to all the teams.
