Cubs 5-a-Side Football Tournament

Print PDF

Saturday 4th April 2009 saw the return of the 5-a-Side Football Tournament for Brighton District Cub Scouts after an absence of several years. Teams from ten Packs were drawn in two divisions for 30 frantic five-minute games. The top two teams from each division went through to the semi-finals, which saw the 23rd, 31st, 42nd Mowgli and 42nd Seeonee Packs compete in a further six seven-minute games.

This year's final was a "seaside derby" between the 23rd (Rottingdean) and 42nd Seeonee (Saltdean) Packs. It was a close-fought match, with no score after normal time of five minutes each way. The score was still 0-0 after extra time, so the result had to be decided on penalties. Each team took five penalties alternately in an incredibly tense atmosphere for the young players. There had to be a winner, however, and eventually the 23rd lost out to the 42nd Seeonee 4-5.

Feedback from Cub Scouts and Leaders has been very positive, and everybody had an exciting afternoon. I was particularly pleased that a girls team from the 30th Tigers entered. It was also refreshing to see children who wouldn't normally play competitive football having a go and thoroughly enjoying all the attention from the spectators!

My thanks to all the Packs that entered for their good behaviour and sportsmanship, and to Graham Whittaker and the staff at the Portslade Sports Centre for hosting us.

PACKS THAT ENTERED: 6th, 7th, 14th, 23rd, 30th Eagles, 30th Tigers, 31st, 42nd Mowgli, 42nd Seeonee and 44th
