Health & safety risks

Everyone is responsible for his or her own safety. Leaders must ensure that everyone is aware of the risks involved in camping and other activities.

Be aware that:

  • most major injuries result from falls from height
  • moving vehicles or falling objects also cause major injuries
  • many injuries result from lifting and carrying heavy objects
  • electrocution is on the increase
  • slips and trips cause many less serious injuries

Beware of complacency. It is dangerous to think that it cannot happen to you!

Individuals and groups shall take note of the following

Particular hazards of camping, and or just playing in the woods include:

Trip hazards, (tree roots, sharp stones and broken glass etc) – wear stout shoes, walk don’t run!

Fires, hot embers and cooking pots etc. – Fires must only be lit in designated places or on bare ground and must be well protected. Pots etc must be properly supported and stable. Don’t let children play with fire and train them to keep their distance.

Knives, saws and axes – must be controlled by a leader and only used by qualified individuals

Adventurous activities – must be well planned and supervised

Cleanliness and good hygiene – Wash hands regularly. Keep food off the ground and secure against wildlife. Store perishables properly. Make sure all utensils, pots and pans etc are clean.

Rubbish Disposal – Please recycle as much as possible, take your rubbish home and as a last resort use the bins at the car park. Don’t leave waste and rubbish about the site.

Site boundaries, restricted access areas and ‘site rules’

Out of bounds is designated by the boundary fences. The wardens building, the garages and the sewage treatment compound are all out of bounds to site users. In addition the car park and fenced activity area are restricted to necessary access, for rubbish disposal, wood collection and for organised activities.

The buildings are only accessible to those groups who have booked them. The kitchen is an adult only area.

Do not attempt any maintenance – inform the warden about any breakage’s, damage or electrical failures etc.

Please observe the following:
